Adobe CS4 (and now CS5) problem with install …SOLUTION! (hangs at 90%)

Adobe CS4 (and now CS5) problem with install …SOLUTION! (hangs at 90%)

A lot, let me repeat a LOT of people are having issues when installing Adobe CS4 (and now CS5 as well) onto their PC’s and MAC’s, during installation (Checking System Profile)  it “freezes” at 90% I say “freezes” with parenthesis because it technically doesn’t freeze, the process just never continues. Ok, so your here because you have this issue and you don’t want to hear the BS…so here goes the solution… It isn’t because of Adobe Flash, it isn’t because of a trial installation of CS4 or CS3. It’s the lame ass stupid fckin anti-piracy check. Here’s how to solve the problem and install your legit OR pirated copy (Shadyman) or whatever version you have.

First:You must un-install prior installations of CS4 (or CS5), attempting to do so by Windows Control Panel>Add remove programs (or Programs & Features in Vista) , results in FAILURE, the stupid shit just doesn’t remove. (Mac users use APPZAP)

So go HERE and download the uninstall app from Adobe, BUT before you run it, Windows user must download and install (then restart your computer) “Windows Uninstaller something or other utility” (Link is included in the PDF in the uninstaller program from Adobe ) Trust me, you can’t skip this step. ;)  my fellow MAC users, the process is almost identical, except well, you won’t use Windows uninstaller something or other, you’ll use the MAC version, which the link is included as well in the same location above.

Second: you run the Windows/Mac uninstaller utility, it will ask for a restart, sooo Restart…once your back in Windows (or Tiger/Leopard/Snow Leopard) , run the Adobe uninstaller utility, it is a Command prompt box in windows, and I haven’t run it in MAC sooo I imagine it to be a terminal utility. It will ask if you want to remove Adobe CS3 or CS4 or CS5, I just chose to remove everything. (I know it’s scary because it just so happens that you have a deadline to meet tomorrow and don’t want to risk uninstalling everything…we all have that same deadline lol) Once its done uninstalling (it took like 10 minutes),  go into Control Panel and run windows default uninstall (add/remove programs , Programs & features in Vista) , Mac users, your pretty much ready for the next step after a restart.

Back into windows/Tiger/Leopard/Snow Leopard, DISCONNECT from the INTERNET completely, I say this because some people don’t pay attention that if they disc0nnect a LAN line, sometimes a wireless signal is picked up and again, your connected to the internet, just disable all NIC or wifi ports completely. Mac users, disable Airport, disconnect Cat5 cable, This applies for genuine versions as well as pirated versions! Once you’ve done all this, now run the installation

Since you’ve most likely watched the install a thousand times by now, your going to be anticipating the installer to freeze again at 90%, and for some funny reason, it will pause on 90% for about 45 seconds, but this time, IT CONTINUES!, go ahead and proceed with the installation, once its done:

Legitimate users:once the install is completed, you can register (if you want), and plug/turn on/enable the internet and your done :)

Pirated users:Once install is complete, it asks to register, obviously you don’t want to do that, close it and exit installation , DO NOT RUN CS4 components yet, install your crack, either the .exe replacements, or the activation disabler, or whatever crack you have, THEN run a CS4 or CS5 component. After this, you can plug/turn on/enable the Internet and your done :)

UPDATES: Seems like a lot more people run into this problem than I anticipated, here are some more solutions if the one I provided didn’t work, these have been submitted by visitors :)

I tried this and worked fine…

SOLUTION :

(1) Attempt to install Flash CS4 upgrade normally (clicking setup.exe). You probably already did this…so you can actually skip…

(2) Go to control panel, add/remove programs and you should see Flash Professional CS4 in the program list. Leave the control panel up, you will need this later…

(3) Navigate to the following folder on your hard drive: C:Program FilesCommon FilesAdobeInstallersa68eec966ce913ddaa63251dc82ed31resourcescommonscripts

(4) Locate a file called “ContainerProxy.js” open it with a text editor (E.G.: Notepad).

(5) Go to line 1102 or simply search for: “jsonObj = _jsonToObject(window.external.SetSessionInitialized(initValue));” and replace this line with: “jsonObj = _jsonToObject(SetSessionInitialized(initValue));”

(6) Save the file by pressing [Strg]+S or use the menu: Menu -> File Save.

(7) Go back to the Control Panel

(8.) Highlight software being installed (Flash CS4 )

(9) Reinitialize the installation by clicking on the change/remove button.

(10) Setup should now work as normal.

For Mac users:
Block all connections to activate.adobe.com with little snitch!  (I recommend using Terminal and manually adding the servers to block IP’s. Little Snitch is an annoying app   -Exempt)

edit /etc/hosts before installing
add 127.0.0.1 activate.adobe.com

How to:

Step 1 – Open Terminal and paste in:
sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts  ALTERNATIVELY YOU CAN USE THIS:
sudo pico /etc/hosts
(Hit return and type in your admin password)

Step 2 – In TextEdit add new lines:

127.0.0.1 activate.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 practivate.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 ereg.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 activate.wip3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 wip3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 3dns-3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 3dns-2.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 adobe-dns.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 adobe-dns-2.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 adobe-dns-3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 ereg.wip3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 activate-sea.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 wwis-dubc1-vip60.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 activate-sjc0.adobe.com
and save it.

Step 3 – leo: Open Terminal again and paste in:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache
(Hit return and type in your admin password)

tiger: lookupd -flushcache

Solution!!

PC Users, i have a copy of CS4, i tried everything here, nothing happend, so this is what i did:

My copy has a DVD and 2 cds, i needed to extract the DVD to a folder “Adobe CS4″ and create folder “payloads” in “Adobe CS4″ and extract cd1 and cd2 in that folder, then run setup.exe.

So i move the complete “Adobe CS4″ folder to desktop, downloaded diskcleaner, run it, delete everything, turn off my wireless connection and run setup.exe again, it reaches 100% in 30 seconds!!.

Cheers!!

This worked for me.

Only part that I needed to do something different is the following:

Go to line 1102 or simply search for: “jsonObj = _jsonToObject(window.external.SetSessionInitialized(initValue));”

(I couldnt find this so I did a search for: setsessioninitialized)
It found the line and then replaced it with:

jsonObj = _jsonToObject(SetSessionInitialized(initValue));

(a68eec966ce913ddaa63251dc82ed31 — It might be under a different name, just go into the folder and you will soon know if it’s the correct one or not.)

(PLEASE SEE THE TOP OF THIS PAGE FOR HELP ON THIS BIT ABOVE)

(6) Save the file by pressing [Strg]+S or use the menu: Menu -> File Save.

(7) Go back to the Control Panel

(8.) Highlight software being installed (Flash CS4 )

(9) Reinitialize the installation by clicking on the change/remove button.

Another Solution:

Submitted by “Lord Hellfire”

First of all. Disconnect the Internet, or better, set up a firewall to permanently block all communication with adobe.com for the programs… I simply dare not let it update anything, as that may screw up the installation. I have little faith in Adobe’s abilities to keep CS3 and CS4 running smoothly after updating. (And no. It’s not a pirated version. I’m just not eager to go through this three day hell again)

Read through the entire text before you try it yourself, as the solution at the bottom may be what also works for you and then it would be senseless to go through all these steps first… ;)

First of all, open a command prompt and type: change user /install
This enters the user profile into an Installation mode (Server 2008 R2, remember?), which permits more changes to the registry, than even “run as administrator” does.

Installing CS3 (I installed this AFTER I managed to get CS4 installed):
– See fixes for CS4 regarding unreadable registry keys. No need to check log, as installer shows you which keys.
– CS3 has quite a lot more of these unreadable keys in Server 2008, than CS4 does.

Installing CS4:
If something goes wrong and the installer will not initialize (stays at 90% for more than a few minutes), close the installer and do the following:
– Open the log file (unpack the .log.gz with winrar)
Located in C:Program Files(x86)Common FilesAdobeInstallers
– Check the bottom of the log.
– Some registry keys will be noted as unreadable.
– Search for these HEX keys and change the parent and subkey ownerships to ‘Administrators’.
– Then add ‘Administrators’ as users with full rights on the subkeys.
– Remove any Adobe installation (Setup and any CS3/CS4 related installations) using Windows Installer Cleanup.
Download WIC here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
– Run the CS4 Clean script. (requires WIC)
Download CS4 IC here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406241.html
– Delete the Program files(x86)/Common files/Adobe folder.
- If other Adobe programs use the Adobe folder, you may damage them, but they are a helluvalot easier to reinstall than CS3 and CS4.
– Reboot and try installation again. (Remember to ‘change user /install’ in a command prompt. This state changes whenever you log off, reboot or successfully complete an installation)

If it still fails/hangs at 90% for more than a few minutes, even after 10+ tries, then try this last simple workaround which worked for me… although I can only guess as to why…
– Start Internet Explorer.
– Start installation.
– Installer now completes the initialization beyond the 90%.
– Close Internet Explorer, when installer requests this.

Yet another submission from a commentor:

For all those who overlooked the fact that there actually are applications for Mac OS X which come with an uninstaller and tried to delete CS3/4 by dragging it into the trash: after running the clean script (as I did), it is not possible to use the uninstaller anymore (in case you haven’t emptied your trash yet and recovered the uninstaller files). If you try to reinstall the whole thing then, the installer will “freeze” at about 90%. The solution is to delete the “Adobe”-Folder in “/Library/ApplicationSupport”

As of April 8th 2010, I still do provide support for the install of CS4, even though we are a few short days away from the release of CS5. I understand most of us don’t rush out to buy the new CS5 and Adobe provides very limited support for CS4 due to this.

Most of the installation problems are caused by the piracy check, conflicting settings with previous Adobe installs, and improper uninstall before attempting to install a new Adobe Suite, so keep in mind you must delete all references to Adobe before getting a new install to work correctly.

**Update** Update** **Update** Update** **Update** Update** **Update** Update** **Update** Update**

Ok so a lot of us have learned that Adobe even with CS5, has not got their shit together still. And to be honest the installer is the exact same, plagued with the exact same issues. I could care less whether or not your using a legitimate copy or pirated, the install issues are just horrible.

The best method for installing whether it’s the ENTIRE CS4 or CS5 suite or just a singular app (like JUST Illustrator), is to disconnect the internet PRIOR to installation, if not, you can actually see that Adobe checks online to update the “blacklisted” serials from the pirated copies floating the web. If your already having problems, which most likely you are, because your reading this, then it gets pretty vanilla here and your options are very limited.

One, you try downloading the Adobe uninstaller tool, and run it, and delete any remnants of the CURRENT suite your trying to install, so if your trying to INSTALL CS5, and have been having problems, then run the tool, DELETE CS5, REBOOT (you MUST REBOOT), and try the install again with the INTERNET DISCONNECTED. If it doesn’t work at this point, and I know this is extreme, but I’d just reformat at this point….yah I said it…reformat the whole f*****in operating system. If your in Vista especially, it’s such a major pain in the ass to nit-pick and attempt to delete registry keys and what not.

Now you may not want to have to go through all of that, the whole reformat process, I don’t blame you, it takes hours even days to get settings back to normal, and it’s just a shitty experience overall.

Recently I attempted to help a friend install CS5, she had tried with no success several methods and yet none of them worked. She would insert Dvd 1, it would read it , start the installer, and then ask for Disk 2, then Disk 3, then back to Disk 1, then FAIL. Quite an annoying process. I tried for several hours to get beyond this, nothing worked. I thought it was originally bad DvD’s , but nope, a reformat, Windows 7 upgrade (she was using vista), and voila, runs flawlessly.

I personally recently installed CS5, a gift from Adobe, which I thought was very nice of them by the way. I too had trouble installing the entire suite. My install would ask for the serial, which I entered, my legitimate serial, and it said “invalid serial” over and over. I couldn’t figure out why, it was a legitimate copy from Adobe themselves. So I clicked on the “Trial” option, it installed the entire suite just fine. When I attempted to open any individual app however, it immediately asked for the serial, for every single app. Again the serial didn’t work. I finally found a Keygen online and it provided individual serials for each app, and this worked fine….go figure right?

I still have problems with After Effects CS4 AND CS5, they work, but are majorly bugged out. CS4 After Effects, my mouse cursor turns into a 1 inch by 1 inch pixelated black and white box, and never changes back, and in CS5 I get missing output modules error upon start, and attempting to add “wiggle” or sketch, gives me an error as well, and I can’t continue with my projects.

I did find out however in the midst of all the bullshit, a solution to a problem I’ve had for a few months. (and yes this is off topic but screw it)  I could not select certain menu items in After Effects (or any of the CS4 or CS5 suites) with the mouse, I had to TAB through them and select with the keyboard, then go back to editing with my mouse. This is a desktop composition problem with Windows and typically associated when you have dual or triple monitors, so one of two things work to fix it, A: Turn off windows desktop composition ENTIRELY, or B: right click the icon, and goto the COMPATABILITY tab, and check the little box “ignore Desktop Composition” or whatever it says. Restart the app and voila, your cursor goes back to normal.

4/21/2011 – This is a END ALL solution! I have tested so many variables and this worked flawlessly on all PC installation problems. Download THIS with your bitorrent of choice (mine is utorrent)or follow the link below and follow the instructions, it’s a VERY simple process. You should have no problems after this! I’m currently working on installation and verification issues with Magic Bullet Suite 10 as well, many users are complaining that the plugins continuously ask for serials even with legitimate copies, at first I thought it was a user problem until I experienced it myself!

I do believe all of the ideas you’ve offered for your post.
They are really convincing and can definitely work. Still, the posts are too brief for beginners.
May you please extend them a bit from next time? Thank you for the post.

Even aside from these possibilities, is also
tough to find a proxy server that isn’t going to change IP frequently, so you’re
going to have to frequently update which proxies you use. Big Momma falls into trouble as she is being chased by the
school’s goofball janitor Kurtis Kool (Faizon Love). However, Garmin POI Loader is very efficient in terms of poi downloading since its inception yet there has been a few obligatory changes and improvement in it. Because the PSP save game folders use the same names for the same games, copying folders into these locations could lead to lost data. From the website, you can Download The Tall Man and any other recently released movies of Hollywood even Bollywood, Filipino and other movies too. Simply click on External Mirror 1 and your Zune driver download will begin.

Do you happen to have anything Adobe installed? Even Adobe reader, or Adobe Flash?

It seems that in the last couple years Adobe basically attempts to authenticate all installed Adobe software from any of it’s channels.

I have a student copy of CS4 as I was a student when I bought it. I recently got a new MacBook Pro (with USB3). I have this CS4 running on my wife’s Mac Mini with no problem (Snow Leopard) but I can’t install it on my MBP running Lion. I have been everywhere and no one even references my problem and Adobe wants me to buy a new license. Since I feel I already over paid for the student license, I am not inclined to go and pay more for it.

Here is what I see, anyone that can help me would be my hero:

    (1) I put in the CD/DVD as I have the legit media with key.
    (2) Since it does not autorun for me, I navigate in and find the setup.app and double click.
    (3) A grey rectangle appears saying “Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Standard Installer: Initializing” with a blue progress bar in the middle.
    (4) The progress bar creeps across and stops with about 80-90% remaining in the initialization process. There is a caption at the bottom of the rectangle saying “main_pageSubTitle”
    (5) I sit here for hours, and my CD/DVD has stopped spinning. This never moves, nor errors out.

I have been into the Adobe installer log and it claims it can’t find a few files, but I don’t know what to make of them.
    – Localization: missing stringID “main_pageSubTitle” for en_US in /Volumes/[ADOBE CD PATH]/blah/blah/blah/main.xml
    – same for locInitializing
    – same for locProductNameInstall

I have recently re-installed this on my wife’s machine, so I know the install is fine, and there have not been concerns with registration, activation, or piracy. I just can’t get it to install on my new mac… I am guessing hardware or software incompatibility. However, because it is a student license, Adobe does not want to help.

    Can someone here help?

As this article is the most complete I ever found on adobe installation problems I’ll leave my comment here. However it is not related to 90% fail installation :
    CS5 installer doesn’t mount.

On a macbook pro and on an iMac (my creative suit installation file is an official one).

    Process :
    OK to unzip,
    OK to mount .dmg,
OK to open the “install” file,
But, the Adobe install icon pops up into the dock then stops, and the software dosen’t react anymore.

    Source of the problem :
I found that the version of my font explorer is too old for the creative suit. In fact Linotype font explorer X can controls softwares from the CS for activating and inactivating fonts without having to restart them.
Recently my CS soft started to freeze and then wasn’t starting anymore. I decided to re-install it and discovered that the installer itself was freezing.

    Solution :
Uninstalled the old version of Font explorer X (actually the harder to find was to understand where did come the problem !)

Thanks for the help your article and comments provided to my problem anyway.

I have a legit copy of cs4. after clean install cs4 would not accept legit serial #. So I go one off the net and it was rejected. after that no install joy. I guess I’m being punished for trying to use a fake #. Getting ready to take it to Geek Squad for help.

Ack don’t call the geek squad they are clueless and will just end up charging you for the visit. You need to download the adobe uninstaller from here: http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html and make sure to reboot after any system change.

You can alternatively download the ultimate crack pack and try one of the many serials included in it, as well as it comes with the adobe creative suite cleaner. But whatever you do … Please don’t call the geek squad !

    Xml Data as under
    ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

    ———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

What is happening is we are storing many swf files and xml files for different cities on server location 1 with same code but are just changing the xml file to be picked.
    I.e

    DELHI.XML DELHI.SWF
    BANGKOK.XML BANGKOK.SWF
    SYDNEY.XML SYDNEY.SWF

All are in one folder and we are just changing the xml path in fla files and loading the new swf.

Then we are giving out swf urls to an advertising company which is in turn picking up swf files from sever location 1 and displaying the same on their website.

The problem is each time we access the swf file on there site the data doesnot display properly. It is picking up the wrong xml data. When we check the fla the path for xml is ok. What we think is it is saving swf or xml in cookies of user computer. Is there anyway to prevent it from happening.

We Are using Adobe Flash CS5.

    Thanks

Sorry for the delayed response, I’ve been tied up, what seems to be the problem, and are you using a pirated or legit copy of CS5?

Are you installing a stand alone copy of Illustrator? Sometimes it helps to download the entire suite of CS5 (now I would download cs5.5) and just uncheck all the apps you do not want to install. But I need more information in order to help you, are you using a pirated or legit copy of CS5, what version of windows are you using, did you have previous versions of Adobe products installed?

Is it possible to copy and paste news articles for my blog or is that copyright infringement?

Not sure why you posted that comment in the Adobe CS4 CS5 topic but I’ll answer anyways:

If you provide a link back to the location where you are sourcing your information from then no it is not copyright infringement, it’s called a trackback or pingback. However if you copy and paste information and do not have a link back to the original content then several negative things can happen. Copyright infringement is one, but that requires a attorney and attorney fees, but worse yet, by simply providing Google with proof showing that you were the original poster, they can and have blacklisted sites…and that is worse in my opinion than copyright infringement.

I have an actual serial number and don’t need a crack, I just can’t get the apps to launch once I’ve installed everything. I get a “license expired” notice, but I know that it is not. There’s some sneaky file in there that’s keeping me from loading up this product. I don’t even know where to look. Adobe chat didn’t know either. Such a mess. It should have taken a half hour and I’ve spent a full day trying to get this to intall.

Aaaahh I misunderstood your first post I have a very simple solution, go to the bottom right and click on the Time & Date, and set your current date and time one year back, click apply and you can now open your app, change the serial if you need from there :)

I am using a mac and have had MAJOR issues trying to install InDesign CS4. I have CS5 and CS3, but my client wants me to make everything in CS4 (the ONLY version of ID I don’t have a purchased copy of!). I have tried countless times to install and my last time I completed this:
uninstalled CS5 (had just ID and PS)
    uninstalled CS4 (which never launched)
    uninstalled CS3
used Adobe clean suite which you sugggest
restarted with internet not even plugged into my time capsule
    installed only ID of CS4
reg # is accepted (it’s from the client)
app loads fine, it’s only when I launch that it says “license expired”. They are using the same license, so I know it’s not expired. This happened on another version I got from a different client, so there must be something in there that’s screwing it up! I found one folder “product licenses” that I moved to the desktop. Now I can’t remember where it came from (some Adobe folder). Been at this for hours and hours as I need to return the software back to them plus as you know I have files to get to them too and have no app to do them in! HELP!!!!

You can download “the ultimate crack pack” located on the home page here at failedexe.com, use the keygens to authenticate, if your not able to authenticate then well have to modify some registry keys , but keep me posted on your progress

      Hi Carlitos,

Is your internet connected when your doing the install? Have you previously updated CS4?

If your goal is to install CS5 and not use CS4 at all, then have you tried using the Adobe uninstaller to completely remove ALL adobe suites? then make sure to always RESTART after any uninstall of Adobe products.

If your just looking for the CS4 key, there is also a txt file in the Ultimate crack pack that has different serials than the keygen in the crack pack.

If you still don’t have any luck let me know!

    What do I do please?
Mean while, I have Photoshop, Flash & DreamWeaver CS3 running. These 3 seperate programs were there before and after I installed cs5.

I have been using CS3 master collections for some time and needed to upgrade to CS4 due to AVCHD editing. I too am having much difficulty installing CS4 master collection. The first two installs ending with expired serials and asking for new ones. which resulted in deleting the software. Unfortunately, I have not been able to reinstall the software again as it stalls out. It appears that I have to delete CS3 as well which I need to keep working on some projects. Is there any way to install the CS4 to make sure it remains working fine without any gliches without deleting CS3.

If I’m correct you can simply change the default install directory and it should install and play nicely with cs3 and cs4, but why not just go for cs5 or cs5.5?

Sorry for the delay in reply, I was covering the Ipad2 announcement ! I haven’t heard of this specific issue since you are using legitimate disks. A very possible solution is to actually copy the contents of the disks to your hard drive and run the installer from the file rather than from the autoplay on the dvd’s. I will look further into this since I haven’t heard of it before.

Here is what happened to me, in short:
I had perfectly working CS4. Then I decided to try CS5 and downloaded [from torrents.to] Adobe Photoshop CS5 portable edition. AFAIK – it does not exist [yet?] and I was fooled around and after starting CS5 – CS4 gets corrupted totally! I couldn`t even start Illustrator CS4 and whole CS4 become Time Trial [!] tryout.

This is how I solved it:

    - Go to Control Panel and uninstall CS4.
    - It will “do something!?” – and after 2-3 seconds CS4 will not be anymore displayed in installer BUT all files will remain on program files/adobe directory [!]
    - Then go & install CC [CrapCleaner free program], open it, RUN it [clear system once] and then go to REGISTRY tab. Click “Scan for Issues” [button] – it will in a 20 seconds find all problems and display thousands of files in its window. Then click on “FIX SELECTED ISSUES” button and reboot.

CrapCleaner will delete all traces including broken CS4 package :]

Just in case [I read it here], I installed also Disk Cleaner [freeware tool], that does more or less – the same as CrapCleaner. I, just in case, cleaned system once more using Disk Cleaner [it worked very fast] and then reboot again.

After this essential steps, I unpacked CS4 [I have good old working version] to Desktop and installed it. After ~2 hours of unpacking and installing – all went well!

Finally everything is back on track!

CS4 works and I deleted CS5. I will have to wait if there will be just CS5 Photoshop that could work parallel with CS4 on my WindowsXP SP3.

I hope my story will help somebody. :)

After trying everything I read, my last choice was to move the folder “Adobe CS4″ from the 64-bits “Program Files” folder to the 32-bits “Program Files x86″ folder. And that worked! So if you are having problems in a 64-bit OS, make sure you install the program in Program Files x86 :)

    OMG I can’t believe I got it.
What was crucial for me was deleting the whole folder C:Program FilesCommon FilesAdobe.
This was the only thing that made it work.
    Thank you!!!

I’m having trouble installing CS4 it keeps saying it failed to install on a bunch of stuff. The Windows Install Cleaner is no longer available so I don’t know what else to do in order to run the CS5 cleaner. Any suggestions?

A lot of users that report that certain locations don’t exist, remember to toggle “view hidden files” and “view system files” under folder options. I’ve also found that by having firefox open during the uninstall will cause errors since there are adobe products active in firefox (flash).

I have a video coming with tons of different solutions, I have been working on it for a while now, it’s still a few days, if not a week away but hopefully it will answer a lot of questions out there!

I’m a professional photographer and have been using PS Elements 4 —- no, that’s not a typo.
    Window’s Vista 64 bit.

I’ve uninstalled Elements 4 from my machine.

I have the CS5 Extended disk that I bought on Ebay.

Each time I try to install, the “initiating installation” progress bar slowly moves from left to right, only to stop at about 98% complete and then absolutely nothing happens. It essentially happens just as described in the opening paragraph.

I’ve ran the Windows Install Cleanup and it found an old folder from Photoshop Elements and it removed it.

I then ran the CS5 Installer Database Utility. Sometimes it says cleanup complete. Other times it says cleanup complete BUT WITH ERRORS.

Checking the Log File it claims that a folder still exists and it needs to be removed. It then refers to a path that simply does NOT exist on my computer.

    C/PrgramFiles/AppData/Adobe/OOBE

There is no “AppData” on my computer.

The cleaner utitity seems to flip flop and completes with no errors, then after another reboot, the same error message pops back up.

I restart after a successful clenaup, run the CS5 installer and still a no-go on the installation. It stalls out as usual.

I’ve since tried the following registry cleaners and each one INITIALLY finds some remnand of Photoshop and removes them. Running each program again never reveals the same problem twice:

    CCleaner
    Revo Uninstall Utility
    Tune Up 1 Click Maintenance

Adobe Support Adviser doesn’t find any problems.

I’ve tried every conceivable method of cleaning, rebooting, deleting, uninstalling and nothing works.

I cannot even re-install PS Elements 4 on my machine. This is killing me. I have clients waiting on images.

My business is suffering and I’m about to wipe my hard drive and re-install Windows if I cannot fix this.

Any suggestions are GREATLY APPRECIATED and sorely needed!

    Thanks!

I am having problems with Illustrator CS4. I want to re-install it. I have the master suite collection. I don’t have original discs or serial numbers. If i use the Master Suite set-up to uninstall Illustrator can I re-install it without it asking for serial number?

This means that there are components still remaining pertaining to instructions from an Adobe application. Most of the time what this directly refers to, is Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash (in firefox) or what not, is running in the background. Unfortunately Adobe apps are just horribly intertwined into the operating system.

I still aint getting past this! Adobe’s CS4 Clean Script is not working for me! I’ve installed Window’s Install Clean Up and done that step, but when I’m about to start the Clean Script I just get to the part where i should choose language! In an instant, the script just quits. I made a print screen of it just before it closes and this is what it says:

    “Traceback (most recent call last):
    File ‘CS4InstallerDatabaseUtility.py’, line 1453, in
File ‘CS4InstallerDatabaseUtility.py’, line 860, in writeDirTokens

What does this mean and what can I do to fix it? Please help!!

What worked for me was the option of running the pair of uninstaller routines under each of 3 user accounts on the machine and then starting IE and then the installer. The installer will ask at roughly the 90% point that you close IE and then it proceeded normally.

Note to Adobe, if you read this thread, why do you CARE that my IE connection is open? You shouldn’t TOUCH anything going to the internet until I’m ready to activate the license! I’m a system builder and this is NUTS! If you have this same installer on CS5 I will stop recommending it and switch to Avid Media Composer for clients.

Took me a lot of thinking to get pass this, if you are a mac user and nothing above has helped try the following:
Go to “Setup” Then go to option
    Click on “Show package contents”
    then go to Contents/MacOS/Setup

This should open with terminal and hopefuly work
    Good luck,

EDIT: sorry, note to self shouldn’t post to blog while driving in traffic,

@tyrano-coke there are over ten solutions provided here, some of them are user submitted, you didn’t state which one you tried. It works for 95% of people with the install problem, so I take into account that 5% are kinda like me, and rush through instructions, failing to do a *single* critical step can cause it to not work. Which operating system are you using? Which version of update are you running SP1 SP2? Did you disconnect from the internet, did you fully uninstall all adobe products? Which method of uninstall did you do?

There are many people reading this blog, on a single day over 600 people on average read this topic. So being all cranky because nobody jumped when you asked, is not the correct way to go about it. You can find the solution here, I even offer to hop on remotely and DO IT for you, for free. So if you want the solution you’ll need to be more descriptive.

Tried a few of these, didn’t wanna do the full uninstall as it looked like it was gonna take way too long and I dont wanna lose any of my PShop settings.. (i’m trying to install premiere and it’s hanging)

Log files said something about duplicate files in the installer folder, so I just went into the aforementioned:

C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAdobeInstallers folder and renamed the b3234sdfkajsjfjk234asdmn34 folder (the one people say to go into to edit the file) and renamed that folder to something else….

Reran the install and it went through.

When I try to do your miracle solution, the program says I have no adobe products installed, and yet when I try to install it keeps telling me I have a critical error, this solution is incredibly invalid.

I guess adobe just wants to screw us over (I can’t install I can’t uninstall because I have nothing installed in the first place).

Will anyone with a real solution please step forward?

what a wealth of information when I was feeling very stuck. fortunately, I was doing a test install on my laptop before installing CS4 programs on my desktop. I downloaded the trial versions of Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and InDesign from the Adobe site. I have a keygen from chamaira.

I successfully installed Dreamweaver CS4 and then I tried to install Photoshop. that’s when the hanging at 90% occurred during the initializing stage. I tried three times, then figured, okay, something’s really up here. then on a lark I tried opening Dreamweaver again to see if it would still work. I got a notice that the serial was no longer valid, so I entered another and it seems to be okay. however, it’s clear that it’s going to all have to be uninstalled now….

one of my questions is this…when I went to the Adobe site to get the CS4 trial download, the only options I could find were to download each program individually. from reading posts here it’s looking like installing programs individually is not going to work. any feedback on this? and where oh where can I find a full CS4 download? can someone help me with that? and if it’s available on the adobe site, could someone please post the exact page url?

I’m so glad I didn’t try to install on my desktop as that’s where I work and I would be stuck for days without Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I’m using CS3 versions there and they work just fine, however I was unable to get other programs to run back when I installed those. I really need InDesign.

thanks for all your help! I’m willing to try all suggestions above, but I’m thinking I need a CS4 download instead of individual files. it was very complicated trying to install them one at a time.

thank you so much. I really need help and need to get CS4 on my desktop computer.

Best solution from me when it “freezes” at 90%. What you do go to another PC or laptop then copy all files you want to install on desktop. Run the setup.exe sure it will finished 100%. After that it will require you the serial number. Use crack and go to next page. Then you customize the installation, just select all applications then click install. it will require the Cd or DVD then cancel the installation. Go to C:Program FilesCommon FilesAdobeInstallers

then copy Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 10.0 03-03-2010.log.gz and dreamweaver folder with lots of number example on my pc > 0cd60973db40c7a18d728cb3d445563

After that go back to your problem PC or laptop and paste the files on the dreamweaver folder, the winzip file put inside the installers. makse sure before you paste delete the old files inside the dreamweaver folder and dreamweaver zip file. then try to install.

This method is really work since we are copying the files from other PC and put on your PC > please email me if you have any problem regarding this issue > mergaztua@yahoo.com

I’ve been faced with this problem on my Snow Leopard mac too, and i thought I’d share my solution.

After mounting the installer .DMG and opening up the folder in it containing the setup app i right-clicked and selected “Show Package Contents”. From there i navigated to Contents->MacOS and ran the “Setup” unix executable file.

And now it’s installing. Don’t know why, don’t care why. It works. Happy panda face.

The solution is to delete the “Adobe”-Folder in “/Library/ApplicationSupport”.

THANKS TO ALL FOR THEIR IDEAS ABOUT SOLVING INSTALLATION PROBLEMS W/ CS4. I AM A LONG TIME USER OF PHOTOSHOP FROM THE FIRST UP TO CS3. I BOUGHT CS4 TO INSTALL ON A NAIVE QUADCORE WITH 8GIGS AND A TERABYTE HD FOR PHOTO EDITING. NO FIX I’VE TRIED PERMITTED INSTALLATION AND I RETURNED THE SOFTWARE FOR A REFUND. AS A PHOTOGRAPHER I DO NOT FEEL I SHOULD BE ASKED TO BECOME AN IT EXPERT IN ORDER TO SUCCESSFULLY INSTALL THEIR SOFTWARE. THEY NEED TO COME UP WITH AN ONBOARD SOFTWARE FIX THAT AUTOMATICALLY ADDRESSES THESE ISSUES INSTEAD OF REQUIRING THESE MANUAL DOWNLOADS AND RESETS. FOR THE PRICE WE PAY FOR CS4 ITS RIDICULOUS TO BE WASTING PROFESSIONAL TIME ATTEMPTING TO FIX THEIR PROBLEMS FOR THEM. WHAT CHANGED THAT CS3 WORKED FINE AND CS4 DOES NOT? MAJOR ADOBE MISTAKE IN MY OPINION.

    Ok Folks,

we solved the promblem when trying to install CS4 on windows 7.

Once you have disconnected from the internet, and are ready to click the setup.exe for the installer, right click and select “troubleshoot” option. from there select OS Win XP or Vista.

Do a test if needed, and all shall run as normal.

    Goodluck

    Hello,

I have a problem, I cannot uninstall any partially installed CS4 applications. It pops up the uninstall, then an error occurs with windows, closes it, and then its still there. I have tried many uninstall special programs, and all I could delete were the registry files somewhere in the system. Any help would be appreciated.

There are many associated registry keys that seems to be left behind, the absolute proper way to make sure your doing a fresh and clean install is to uninstall ALL adobe programs, even those not associated with CS4, then start with the install of CS4. However it would help me if I knew what the windows error said.

I am having a hell of a time getting CS4 design installed. I downloaded the program and put in the serial number which worked for about an hour. Then I tried to delete the automatic updating ability (but probably screwed that up). Then I uninstalled and reinstalled the entire suite(4 hours later) I downloaded the appropriate “amtlib.dll” file from rapidshare. I think I may have screwed up here but I did not know how to copy and paste the file. So, I clicked and dragged the new file into the appropriate folders in an attempt to replace the old file. When asked if I wanted to replace the other file I said yes. Then when I tried to open photoshop and flash or any other programs I was told that it was not a valid windows image or something like that. So, I am back at square one and very frustrated. I still have CS4 files, but I have uninstalled them. I am wondering if my altering the files will stay constant if I try to extract and reinstall again or if I should just completely delete, re download, and start over. Either way, I need help getting this program on my computer and I also need help getting past the serial number and/or calling home issue. I am operating on Windows XP. Any help is appreciated and feel free to explain everything as if you are talking to a 5 year old. Thanks.

Hey Mike , couple questions, first how did you try to uninstall the automatic updating service? Did it render CS4 useless? After reading your whole comment, I would suggest a full uninstall and reinstall is in order, with updated cracks which is a simple drag and drop over existing files (the “.exe” files) I can show you how to do this via crossloop if you’d like.

Yes you can check for updates, however keep your cracks handy, as sometimes you need to re-apply them.

You can but you may have to reapply the cracks after the update, BEFORE opening the program after the update.

Thank you guys. Especially Flasher. U put me on the right path. In addition to all you suggested, i noticed that I had a boggus setup.exe in my C:Program FilesCommon FilesAdobeInstallersa68eec966ce913ddaa63251dc82ed31 folder. I replaced it with the one from the downloader. And my install went perfectly. Curiously, running it this way, i didn’t had any “checking system profile” step.
    Best of luck!

I tried several ways to correct the hanging, nothing seemed to work… very fustrating….. but I did have success in the end. The adobe cleanscript was rubbish…. in the end I downloaded a programme called “perfect uninstaller”…., and pain stakingly uninstilled each and every adobe programme, and filters etc…. anything that was named adobe was deleted. I then did a quick search and deleted any emptly folders too, did a normal windows disk cleanup. turned the pc off for the night and ran CS4 again this morning…. all worked fine, no hanging this time…. also did not need to disconnect the internet either.

OK. I FINALLY got CS4 Master Suite installed on my last and final attempt before going with a fresh clean install of windows. Let me start by saying that I initially had this installed and running on an XP desktop (really not the best machine performance wise) but it was working fine for a few months. I always ignored any updates from Adobe however, someone ELSE that used my PC thought accepting he minor update for Acrobat 9.xxx was doing me a favor. Well that basically screwed everything up, telling me that only CERTAIN apps of the entire collection were not authentic & would not let that program open.

I read and executed a lot of different tips & suggestions including everyone listed above here but noooooo luck as I see so many others have experienced.

SO here is my step by step process that got me back up & running.

#1. We all know that the “Uninstall” feature is completely useless. The best way to remedy that is to go to http://www.revouninstaller.com & download their free program that forcefully removes any program you want.It has different levels of how deep you want to uninstall (lite, moderate, or complete with registry removal, etc.) So download it & install it. It gives you a panel similar to your control panels “Add/Remove” programs. Don’t uninstall anything just yet.

#2. Download Microsoft’s clean-up utility here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 & also Adobe’s here: http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs4clean.html . Honestly, I really don’t think they were ultimate the “fix”, but I used them in addition to all these other steps & it worked so I suggest doing the same.

#3. SO now you have downloaded everything you will need so you don’t need an internet connection anymore so COMPLETELY disable it in whatever way is easiest. But as others mentioned, if you ignore this , you can forget about having a successful install.

#4. Use the Revo Uninstaller to remove , not only the “CS4 Creative Suite”, but anything and everything that is an Adobe product…..Adobe AIR, Adobe Flash plug-in, Acrobat, Adobe Reader…..REMOVE THEM ALLLL. I used the “moderate setting with Revo. I also deleted all the suggested bold registry keys.

#5. Navigate to C:/Program Files/’And then any folder that starts with Adobe’ (i.e “Adobe”, Adobe Media Player”, etc. Go into those folders and delet as many folders & files within those as you can. Some it won’t let you, but do as many as you can.

#6. Navigate to C:/Common Files/’And then any folder that starts with Adobe’ (i.e “Adobe”, “Adobe AIR”, etc.) DO the same thing. GO in and try and delet as many folders & files relating to anything Adobe.

#7. Empty your recycle bin & restart your PC.

#8. Install the Windows Clean Up Utility you previously downloaded and run the program. It’s pretty self explanatory.

    #9. Restart again.

#10. Unzip the Adobe CS4 Clean up script and double click the CS4InstallerDatabaseUtility.exe. Follow the onscreen instructions. ow if things are going well, it SHOULD tell you that there is NOT any CS4 items on this comp. If it successfully said it removed something. You probably didn’t delete EVERYTHING you could have when going on your seek & destroy Adobe folder/file mission.

#10. Restart yet AGAIN…(I know…pain in the ass…but it worked)

#11. Now……it’s time to roll the dice. Attempt to run your Adobe CS4 Install.exe. Now be warned, it still pauses at the 90% and appears to have frozen and right about the time you are about to say “Ahhhh F**K!!!! (about 1-2mins, it continues the rest of the install process. Tah-da!

    12. Now as far as the instructions from that point….you can easily find those answers. Just getting to the point of INSTALLING the program was a pain in the ass. After all is said & done, you can reconnect to the internet but DONT accept any Adobe updates unless you want to do this all over again. I know disabled them from even occurring to try and update as I should have originally done.

Good Luck! Let me know if this process worked for anyone else!

I have been spending the last three days trying to install CS3 and CS4 on a Server 2008 R2 and that definitely was not easy, but I finally found a simple, yet confusing solution that worked for me. I hope it works for you too :)

    – First of all, open a command prompt and type: change user /install

    This worked for me.

Only part that I needed to do something different is the following:

Go to line 1102 or simply search for: “jsonObj = _jsonToObject(window.external.SetSessionInitialized(initValue));”

(I couldnt find this so I did a search for: setsessioninitialized)
It found the line and then replaced it with:

    jsonObj = _jsonToObject(SetSessionInitialized(initValue));

(a68eec966ce913ddaa63251dc82ed31 — It might be under a different name, just go into the folder and you will soon know if it’s the correct one or not.)

If your having problems with this, it’s because you are either not deleting ALL the associated Adobe applications THEN restarting, or your still connected to the internet, either wired or wireless, and rebooting a lot helps after each change of status.

    Solution!!

PC Users, i have a copy of CS4, i tryed everuthing here, nothing happend, so this is what i did:

My copy has a DVD and 2 cds, i needed to extract the DVD to a folder “Adobe CS4″ and create folder “payloads” in “Adobe CS4″ and extract cd1 and cd2 in that folder, then run setup.exe.

So i move the complete “Adobe CS4″ folder to desktop, downloaded diskcleaner, run it, delete everything, turn off my wireless conection and run setup.exe again, it reaches 100% in 30 seconds!!.

    Cheers!!

I just tried doing this. I followed step one and the following message popped up in Terminal:

      extEdit[785:c0b] *** CFMessagePort: bootstrap_register(): failed 1100 (0x44c) ‘Permission denied’, port = 0×4403, name = ‘com.apple.TextEdit.ServiceProvider’
See /usr/include/servers/bootstrap_defs.h for the error codes.

The TextEdit window popped up too, and I added the text for step two and saved it then went back over to Terminal and pasted the text for that and nothing happened.

Not sure if I’ve done what I needed to do or not.

Unfortunately when I did all this stuff, I went back to the file where I had saved all of the Master Collection’s data, and it was gone. SOOOO I’ll just have to redownload it. I’ll be back in a day or two. =P

      Dude,

I really appreciate all the work you’ve put into helping us with getting CS4 to install! But, like some folks here, I’m still hanging at 90%!
Me: MAC 10.5.7, CS4 Master Collection OEM cheapie! (probably pirated!)

I ran the cleaner, and it confirmed that I had
NO previous CS3′s or 4′s installed.
      I restarted
      I unplugged from network
      turned off Airport
      Ran installer
      …. hangs.
      #$&%)@(& !!!!

I’d like to take you up on that offer to remote in to my machine… I’ll be happy to make it worth your while… Hate to mess with your weekend, but I’m DESPERATE. It’s the old “I have a deadline… blah blah,” but for reals… I do.

      Help a brotha’ out!

I’m not sure if you still check this thread but i’ve been at this install for 3 days now and have gotten nowhere. Trying to install on a hackintosh 10.5.6., 4gb ram, asus board. Get back to me if you’d still be willing to give it a shot, 100 through paypal just for trying.

David, I am having a lot of trouble with this. I am trying a pirated version. I installed it once, it worked fine, but had issues with the hosts file, so uninstalled it and tried again, this time it stops at 90% and a setup error pops up and the whole thing shuts down. I’ve tried all of the “fixes” I’ve read. Done the adobe uninstall steps, with the windows clean up. done ccleaner on the registry, done disk cleanup. I can’t find any trace of adobe stuff, but i get the error. I have used the 30 trial version (after effects, which is what I am trying to install) and it worked fine so I know my system can handle it. It’s frustrating because the first time it worked and now it wont and I don’t know what changed. Any help would be much appreciated!

I’m using pirated version, on winxp sp3, and no previous versions have ever been installed on this pc.

Windows Vista doesn’t install (just till 90%) any Adobe Inc. software from Official site. And on installating (till 90%) it does not show up a new Adobe software in windows “Programs and Features”.

    @None

You didn’t run the application (make sure to actually read the readme/instructions) , run the 4th option on uninstall, and be sure to restart after everything you do, otherwise, it will not work at all.

Also it helps to know which version your using, pirated or legitimate.

For me on Windows Vista OS any of all Adobe CS4 software instalations Setup.exe get’s freezen – stops on 90%.
In “Programs and Features” it doesn’t show-up me any new Adobe CS4 software.
I have tryed registry/tepm cleaning, it doesn’t helps.
And Adobe CS4 Clean Script and Windows Clean Up Utility doesn’t work for me.

Have you any new solution on to intall Adobe CS4 softwares?
Beside’s after some work on Photoshop or InDesign Windows Vista on “Programs and Features” doesn’t let me unintall Adobe software.

GO to http://www.revouninstaller.com/ & download the free application. It is a great program to force programs & related components to uninstall when other uninstall methods won’t work. It will remove your CS4 that you can’t uninstall currently no problem.

Here is what happened to me, in short:

I had perfectly working CS4 on Windows XP SP3.

What’s dumb is… The only program that seems to do a good job removing the previous failed install is the Windows Installer Cleanup utility. But retard microsoft removed it because someone accidentally erased something and cried about it.

Just get it somewhere else. Google MSICUU2.exe …after that plus the adobe utility, cs4 installed great.

Uninstalling should work [at least it works here, WindowsXP SP3] – use classic uninstall, and after few seconds – CS4 will be removed. All files will remain on HD [!] but then use [CCLeaner] CrapCleaner tool, RUN it, then go to Registry tab, scan for issues, fix them all and reboot. As far as I tried – all files were uninstalled this way :)
